Glass carafe and cup of dark coffee on a table with coffee beans and a palm leaf backdrop
By Zero Wasted July 21, 2026
For a country still loyal to a strong cup of tea, we drink an awful lot of coffee. The British Coffee Association estimates that we get through roughly 98 million cups a day across the UK, and for many of us, that morning brew is one of the few small rituals that genuinely makes the day feel like it’s started properly. The good news is you don’t have to give it up to make it greener. The trouble is that “sustainable coffee” has become a bit of a catch-all phrase. It can mean compostable pods, direct-trade sourcing, carbon-neutral roasting, recycled packaging, B Corp certification or community-focused giving, and most brands only tackle a few of those properly. The ones worth knowing about are the ones that go beyond the buzzwords and back it up, whether that’s by paying farmers above Fairtrade rates, running a working pod recycling scheme, or channelling profits into the communities behind the beans. Where to look matters too. The big supermarket names can be hit and miss on transparency, while a number of UK independents are genuinely setting the pace. The brands below have been chosen for the strength of their sustainability credentials rather than their marketing, and they cover a range of approaches so you can pick what fits your kitchen, your kit and your budget.
