If you're looking for the perfect zero waste shampoo and conditioner, this guide rounds up the best sustainable haircare brands.

From shampoo bars, plastic free liquid shampoo, conditioners and refills. All brands, their products, ingredients, packaging and ethics have been researched to make sure that they're good for your hair and good for the planet. The following hot topics are also explored before diving in:

Is sulphate free shampoo good for hair?

Do shampoo bars need a vinegar rinse?

Is palm oil bad in shampoos?

SUSTAINABLE HAIRCARE BRANDS QUICK LINKS

Is sulphate free shampoo good for hair?

Short answer: don't be afraid of sulphates, but support brands that use surfactants that are sustainably derived and opt for milder alternatives if you prefer a gentler wash.

Sulphates are what give products like shampoo their foam and lather. Often made from fatty acids in oils like coconut or palm, they are great at cleansing, removing dirt and leaving your hair feeling fresh and bouncy. It's widely accepted as a safe ingredient in the EU, and Skin Deep give SLS a low hazard rating. So, why is there still such a big taboo around common sulphates like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLeS)?

It turns out they can sometimes be too good at their job! For particularly sensitive skins sulphates can create a sense of hair or skin feeling a little parched. Any more effects than this (dryness, irritation or redness, frizz, colour stripping) is likely down to a fault in the formulation rather than just the fact it contains sulphates, as studies show potential health risks are towards the concentrated ingredient itself, rather than products that contain it. There are also no health concerns associated with using sulphates, such as cancer and birth defects (despite what you might read online)!

Despite this, many forward-thinking brands have decided to look towards milder or no sulphate alternatives, ensuring they are derived from coconut or sustainably sourced palm oil.

Sodium coco sulphate derived from coconut (and sometimes palm oil) is a common alternative. It has a larger molecule than SLS and so isn't able to easily penetrate the outer layers of the skin, which makes for a less aggressive cleanser.

Sodium coco sulphate (SCS) is not the same ingredient as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS).

Sodium cocoyl isethionate is another popular surfactant option that is gentle and sulphate-free. This can also be derived from coconut or palm oil.

If you're looking for SLS free or completely sulphate free shampoo and conditioner you'll quickly be able to scan through the brands on our list below to find out.

Do shampoo bars need a vinegar rinse?

Short answer: no (as long as you choose the right one). Look for pH balanced bars to ensure it's a shampoo bar, and not a soap.

Shampoo bar leaving your hair tangled and waxy? You're actually using soap sold as shampoo.

Having to go through a 'transition period', or recommendations for apple cider vinegar rinses if you live in a hard water area are completely unnecessary, never mind inconvenient. Here's why:

If your 'shampoo bar' contains saponified oils like Sodium Olivate (from olive oil), Sodium Castorate (from castor oil), Sodium Cocoate (from coconut) it's essentially a cold process natural soap being sold as a shampoo bar.

Saponified oils are where an ingredient like coconut oil is treated with an alkali sodium to convert it into a soap.  So if you see any ingredient with "Sodium (type of oil)...ate", I wouldn't recommend using this on your hair.

Cold process soaps are far too alkali for hair with a pH of around 9-10, whereas a shampoo should be pH balanced to around 4.5-6.5 ph.

The other big problem is that when soaps combine with the minerals in hard water, it causes a chemical reaction that results in an insoluble white-grey residue. This residue is very difficult to rinse out of hair using the hard water from your tap or shower so it is for this reason that you hear of the apple cider vinegar along with trying to counteract the high pH of the soap (apple cider vinegar which has a pH of around 2-3, but this is now way too low for hair).

So in summary, a high alkaline 'shampoo' is a recipe for tangled, waxy hair (especially in hard water). Any mention of this being down to  'transition period' just simply isn't the case.

Maintaining a pH level within the normal range is very important for the hair and scalp. It’s what keeps it so healthy!

All shampoo and conditioners in the list have been verified as pH balanced.

Is palm oil bad in shampoos?

Short answer: It's complex. Boycotting palm altogether could have some drastic unintended consequences, but demand for responsible palm oil has the potential to drive big changes in the way the oil is produced.

Palm oil production is linked to rainforest and habitat destruction that is often vital for endangered species, along with climate change and human rights violations.

Understandably there has been a huge wave of concern over this oil as the land dedicated to the oil palm has increased 22-fold in four decades and global production is expected to quadruple by 2050. According to WWF it's found in around 50% of packaged products we buy.

77% of global palm oil is used in food, but Europe and the US only absorb 14% of production; Indonesia, China and India consume almost 40%.

However, if we were to boycott the use of palm, it would only mean saying yes to other oil crops to take its place. If there was no palm, there would STILL be deforestation. And on a far larger scale sadly as palm is more efficient than other vegetable oil crops.

Producing an alternative oil like soy, coconut or sunflower would need between 4 and 10 times more land so this would require more land and/or shift the problem to other parts of the world, and threaten other habitats, communities and  livelihoods.

Boycotting palm oil is not the answer. Instead, we need to demand more action to tackle the issues and go further and faster.

So what's the solution? At the moment, the best we have is the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) which is a non-profit body that oversees certified sustainable palm oil, but it's by no means perfect. There have been criticisms of its effectiveness in failing to enforce compliance with regards to RSPO Principles & Criteria, and despite Sumatran Orangutan Society and others  working hard to make it as strong a standard as possible, there is still a way to go.

However if we actively engage in supporting only RSPO certified sustainable production, the hope is, it will lead to more accountability with its members, closer monitoring and investigation, and prompt retraction of membership for any persistent offenders.

Another factor that is already underway is pressure on brands to become more transparent about their palm oil use including any ingredients that are derived from palm.  E.g. in shampoo it can  include but is not limited to: polyglyceryl-4 laurate (definitely palm oil), glycerin, vegetable oil, stearic acid, all surfactants (sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium coco sulfate, decyl glucoside).

Unless all brands had clear information on their use of any palm oil or derivatives of palm they were asked directly. All brands who made the list are either palm oil free or use RSPO certified palm oil (stated below).

Editor's Note:

Love the concept of hanging the bars up so you don't need any dishes. From what I can see they are the only ones on the UK market offering this option. Their surfactant (Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate) is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils - specifically a blend of sustainably sourced sunflower and rapeseed oils. They use palm oil derivatives which are all from RSPO certified sources in their Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate and Glycerine.

Editor's Note:

I like that this shampoo is gentle enough to use every day, with soothing ingredients like aloe and quinoa. Laverana, manufacturer of Lavera natural cosmetics, has also been a member of RSPO, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil since 2018.

Phew! That was a long list, but hopefully this guide has helped with some of your shampoo and conditioner decision making! Know of a great haircare brand you think we should feature? Drop us a message here.
